When you play the blues on your harmonica, you use short sequences of notes called licks and riffs as building blocks for longer musical statements. Therefore, stop-loss orders are important for controlling risk. Once a trade is triggered, a stop-loss can be placed at the swing high/low near point D.
In fact, people have spent over a century coming up with techniques to make the harmonica do things it wasn’t intended to do. Today people are playing it fully chromatically, i.e. with all the notes you find on a piano, and some between as well! People DO play fantastic music on standard tuned harmonicas, it’s just that there are quite a lot of hacks involved in their doing so. The best way to learn this style is by a lot of listening and a lot of playing, but I have included a few examples to get you started .
You will need to purchase your own materials (fabric, floss, needle, etc.) to complete your project. Please enjoy this pattern for your own personal use. If you’re familiar with effects pedals, the sound is similar to what’s known as a Chorus, Tremolo, or Vibrato effects. If you’re familiar with acoustic guitars, the sound is similar to how a 12-string guitar uses 2 strings for each note. The subtle variations in tuning produce a pleasing warble in the sound of each note. For other alternative tunings, Seydel is the best company to order from, but their cheapest offering at the time of this writing is nearly double what you pay for a harmonica like a Lee Oskar or a Special 20.
There are multiple chart patterns to choose from, each of which can be used to spot a different kind of trend. There is quite an assortment of harmonic patterns, although there are four that seem most popular. These are the Gartley, butterfly, bat, and crab patterns. Hello and welcome to this week’s harmonica lesson where I will be showing you how to use blues scale patterns to get around the instrument more quickly.
If you can play these scales fast and accurately, and include parts of them in your solos, then people will think you’re really good. Play two of them together, omitting the middle one and you have a third. All gifts are well-designed and made of premium materials, which ensures both the safety and the lifelike experience. In other words, you will start to learn how to play chords and melodies together, accompanying yourself. You should never play too many notes with the same breath. Controlling your airflow and being consistent with each breath distribution will markedly improve your playing and help you play single notes more efficiently. Aim for no more than 3 or 4 notes per breath at first. Some play more while others play less, but it’s important to master the basics before moving on to more advanced techniques.

After you grasp that logic and use it to shape your phrases, playing the blues on your harmonica will seem as natural as talking. A verse of 12-bar blues has three parts, and each part is 4 bars long. Intraday patterns covering more than one day are less common in stocks, since there are gaps overnight and big volatility changes at the open of the share market, which can throw off a pattern. Harmonic patterns in stocks are more commonly used on four-hour or daily charts, where small daily price gaps do not affect the pattern too much. The price moves lower off D for a potential short trade and then, the stop-loss order goes above the swing high at D. Profit targets are projected based on Fibonacci ratios from AD.
To skip to new holes, pull the harmonica slightly away from your mouth and then returning it to the appropriate position. While you are skipping to new holes and new notes, stop your airflow. The numbers should face you and the lowest sounding note should be on your left. There are several ways to focus your blowing and drawing through just one hole including the pucker method and the tongue method.
For example, above it was mentioned that CD is a 1.618 to 2.24 extension of AB. Some traders will only look for 1.618 or 2.24, and disregard numbers in between unless they are very close to these specific numbers. The bullish pattern is often seen early in a trend, and it is a sign the corrective waves are ending and an upward move will ensue following point D. how to avoid slippage All patterns may be within the context of a broader trend or range and traders must be aware of that. ; 30 November 1756 – 3 April 1827) was a German physicist and musician. His most important work, for which he is sometimes labeled as the father of acoustics, included research on vibrating plates and the calculation of the speed of sound for different gases.
These can be used to aid in the effectiveness of the harmonic pattern and enhance entryand exitperformance. Several price waves may also exist within a single harmonic wave . Prices are constantly gyrating; therefore, it is important to focus on the bigger picture of the time frame being traded.
It’s also key to breathe naturally when playing the harmonica. When we put something in our mouth it’s common to have the inclination to suck with the front of our mouth. Breathe with your lungs drawing air into the back of your throat. Do you or someone you love think the harmonica is the coolest musical instrument in the world?
HARMONICA LESSON: CHUGGING, VAMPING AND TRAIN IMITATION
TheTremolo harmonicahas a beautiful tone for playing traditional songs, but some models can be a bit difficult to play, and none are suitable for playing the blues. Whichever brand chromatic you decide to purchase, I highly recommend that you start with a 12-hole chromatic. The 16-hole versions are too easy to get lost on, the size and weight is cumbersome, and the 12-hole is by far the most common version. Looking at the pattern of keys on a piano, it’s easy to see there are 12 notes that repeat.
Play it at different speeds, vary the rhythms, pay attention to how you shape the tone with your hands. You may enjoy playing these riffs with your hands cupped around a beer glass or tin can to swell the sound. See how long you can keep the riff going, but be careful you don’t hyperventilate! Each pattern provides a potential reversal zone , and not necessarily an exact price. This is because two different projections are forming point D. If all projected levels are within close proximity, the trader can enter a position at that area.

Hohner is the oldest and most popular brand of diatonic harmonica. The Hohner Special 20 is probably the most common and best Hohner for beginners. The diatonic harmonica is the only harmonica on which you can achieve the most expressive bending of notes. Bending notes is a technique which allows the player to change the pitch of a note by changing the shape of the inside of their mouth.
The instrument will have ten holes and play twenty different notes. Because we are going to focus on songs with only eight notes, we will just be using the middle section of the harmonica. One common mistake is to hold the harmonica with your fingers too close to your mouth. Your index finger especially should be a little further back allowing ample space for your lips. This might seem inconsequential at first, but when you want to play a single note you’ll need room to practice the correct technique to isolate that single reed hole. After registering for an MT4 account, traders can search for tools that relate to harmonic trading and other specific patterns, such as Gartley, to find tools for isolating or trading that pattern.
It is used to verify every wave within the pattern, as well as highlight potential profit targets once the pattern has completed. For each pattern, once the first wave has formed, you could use the Fibonacci retracement tool to ensure the following waves are of the correct size to meet the harmonic pattern. Unlike traditional chart trading patterns, such as triangles, head and shoulders, and wedges, a harmonic pattern must meet specific movement requirements to be considered valid and thus tradable.

Lip pursing is one of the most common ways to isolate a note. Learn to breathe deeply from your diaphragm as opposed to your upper chest. Improperly breathing while playing harmonica is a good way to hyperventilate. If you practice deep sustained breathing, filling your entire chest and belly up with air, you’ll find that you gain a more consistent flow and increased control. The Best Harmonica Techniques for a Beginner to Practice Playing
Harmonic price patterns are precise, requiring the pattern to show movements of a particular magnitude in order for the unfolding of the pattern to provide an accurate reversal point. A trader may often see a pattern that looks like a harmonic pattern, but the Fibonacci levels will not align in the pattern, thus rendering the pattern unreliable in terms of the harmonic approach. This can be an advantage, as it requires the trader to be patient and wait for ideal set-ups. For each hole, you change the note by either blowing out or drawing in. See the color and letter coded harmonic chart for the letters of the notes you can play and the colors that will match the patterns in Popular 8 Note Songs.
The bullish Butterfly pattern has the same ratios, but the pattern starts with an up XA wave up. The following is a bearish example of the Butterfly on a one-hour NZD/JPY price chart. The B wave retraces to 0.886, which is just slightly beyond but inverted hammer candlestick it still quite close to ideal. The bearish Bat harmonic pattern looks like a stretched-out “W”. The ratios are the same, except the pattern starts with a price decline from X to A. AB is a move higher, BC is a move lower and CD is a wave higher.
Its only differential is that the retracement of point B, which must be 0.886 of the XA movement without exceeding point X. A bearish crab will track a dip from point X to point A, followed by a modest price rise, a slight fall, and a sharp rise to point D. The butterfly pattern was discovered by Bryce Gilmore who used different combinations of Fibonacci ratios to identify potential retracements. It is a reversal pattern composed of four legs, marked X-A, A-B, B-C and C-D. It is similar to the BAT pattern in that the XA leg leads to a BC retracement, except that the retracement of point B must be precisely 0.618 of XA.
Note that the scale begins on a 4B and ends on a 7B, just like a major scale would do. If you stumble at this point, then slow the scale down until it is right. The interval between these notes is called a “major third”. Be sure not to let the 5B or 3B sneak in and spoil the sound. A cheap price is attractive, but please stay sensible before ordering.
Examples of the 4 triplets followed by explanation of the difference between shuffled and straight 1/8 notes. Click here for our Theory section which will give you a more in-depth look at “Straight vs. Shuffle 1/8 notes”. Then, emphasis on the first note of the triplet is explained and demonstrated.
The fourth riff is often played behind a singer, who sings between each riff. Muddy Waters’ “Hoochie Coochie Man,” featuring Little Walter on harmonica, is probably the most famous of many songs to use this riff. Since the trend can be quite strong and you’re trading a possible reversal trend, you should consider placing targets between points D and C. A Fibonacci retracement tool could be used, placing targets at 0.50, 0.618, or 1, for example.
Chladni also improved on Hooke’s “musical cylinder” to produce another instrument, the clavicylinder, in 1799. Variations of this technique are still commonly used in the design and construction of acoustic instruments such as violins, guitars, and cellos. Since the 20th century, it has become more common to place a loudspeaker driven by an electronic signal generator over or under the plate to achieve a more accurate adjustable frequency.
